1983 Honda Goldwing Aspencade Problems

Is there anyone that can talk me through how to fix my 1983 Honda Goldwing Aspencade problems? I just bought a 1983 Goldwing l100, Interstate Aspencade that at an idle, makes a knocking sound until the rpm goes up plus, it will not idle properly.

I would also like suggestions on what I should do to correct this problem. I paid $2,000 for the motorcycle in fair condition and I would like to hear opinions on whether or not that was a fair price.

Go here to see
reviews on Goldwing parts I used so far.

The used Honda Goldwing currently has 67,000 miles on it. I would like to know if anybody else has ever dealt with this or would possibly know what could be causing it to happen.

1983 Goldwing knock at idle when cold
by: Anonymous

This is almost normal with most of these old Goldwings if it is coming from each cylinder head over to the Crankshaft and goes away when RPS increase on acceleration.

speedo flux
by: Mike

I had the same issue when I had my front tire changed. I took the tire off and found that the dog ears under the seal were bent and not turning the speedometer drive gear.

I straightened the ears and problem was solved.

Carb problem
by: Ed

Have done many. Carbs need cleaning (maybe rebuilt), this problem ocurrs when bike sat to long. I live in Mo and do not let mine sit. During winter I use it as much as possible unless snow and ice on roads. That way I do not have this problem.

Spedometer fluctuating
by: Anonymous

I have a 1983 and a 1981. Both run pretty well when running. Haven't been able to get the 1981 interstate started this summer.

The 83 is plush and I have a couple of minor issues. The speedometer pick up is intermittent. Originally I thought it was mechanical that fed the didital display but discovered it is electronic which feeds the digital display and the mchanical trip meter as well. ANyone know what could be causing it to jump around and often not work. Appears to be a loose wire.

low rpm
by: Anonymous

I have an 83 Goldwing Aspencade that will run great and then it will go to a low idle at 440 rpm and runs real rough. Usually after a couple minutes it will pick up and take off again just fin.

This time around it lasted and ran smoothly the whole trip home and still idling at 440.

You can throttle it up and it seems to smooth out but the rpm gauge doesn't move much.

Can anybody help me out?

knocking at idle
by: Joe

I had the same thing happen to my 1100. I took carbs off cleaned them and it would knock an not idle. Once I got the carbs syncronized the knocking was gone and it ran like a dream.

knocking problem with goldwing
by: Anonymous

If you hear the knocking sound emitting from the head area - remove the entire head (exposing the piston and connecting rod), remove the piston and give it a little bit of grease and then reassemble. That should take care of the knocking problem.

83 knocking
by: Anonymous

if the knocking you here sounds like gears clicking your idle is to low-650 rpm.older wings make noise at start up. once bike is warm does knocking leave.if so idle up--plugs at 22--rpm 650
good luck.both my 82 and 83 click when first started.

Fuel delivery

I have an 87 that had the same symptoms when I got it. The carbs will probably need to come out. It's knocking because the cylinders aren't balanced. Yank the carbs and clean/rebuild them. Then get yourself the proper vacuum gauges to synch them once you have them back in. I'm pretty confident that this will solve your problems and you'll start enjoying your GL1100.

carb cleaning
by: Rod

Sound as if the idle passage in your carbs are plugged, a simple check is to pull one plug wire at a time to see if a cylinder is not receiving fuel at idle... if this does not change how it idles that carb idle passage is plugged. I had a bike that was only running on one cylinder at idle. Time to disassemble and clean the carbs, may need to boil them to get the passages cleaned out
