TRY THE NETRAULE by: 5 YRS ELECTRICAL?
The safety switches are most likely sticking. The kickstand switch is harmful for this and it will bounce around all the time sending bad information to your TCI cutting power or not letting any power to the system switch. This is what it sounds like so if you check that and the neutral switch under the left side of the motor then I'll bet you will find your problem

My neighbor has a 1985 Yamaha Virago 1000 and has not ran it for about 5 years, he decided to get it out last year and it quit running so he has some half ass bike repair dealer look at it and just took his money then returned the bike back to him not fully assembled and told him that he blew a rod.
The bike has 8,000 miles on it and we started investigating it last night. At first we couldn't get it to even roll over, so I took the seat off and took apart all the electrical concetions and found a little corrosion on most of the terminals so we cleaned them up and took out the plugs and then it rolled over, both cylinders had compression but then it wouldn't roll over anymore.
