Interesting Facts: The 2005 Harley Sportster 883

The Harley Davidson made the announcement that their very popular 2005 Sportster line of bikes would be featuring a new model, the 883 Sportster Low, which, they indicated, had the lowest saddle of any Sporty ever. It was the 5th of the Sportster lineup to be given an overhaul for 2004 with rubber-mounted engines to calm the vibration that has been reported to be a minor problem.

The Sportster 883L closely followed the old style Sportster Hugger. Shorter suspension components and less padding in the saddle brought the 883L's seat lower to the ground. The handlebars on the bike also shifted the hand controls toward the rear to accommodate riders with less height.

Harley also made a couple of minor changes that spanned the entire range of Sportsters including a bigger, 1 inch diameter rear axle which affected all related parts, the rear wheel, swingarm, brake components, etc. PLUS, they all got a reflector-type headlight, which is claimed to give better forward lighting.

Shorter suspension at both ends of the motorcycle and less padding in the solo seat put riders of the XL883L's closer to the road. The handlebars are pulled back and the seat's shape is a design that moves riders forward. Footpegs located in the middle of the normal range make the bike more accommodating for shorter riders.
