I have a 2002 XR100 for sale in California that is in good condition with a great running motor! I just had just had all workings of the engine checked ...
The reason for the rather tight suggested age restriction is that although the sturdy engine might be able to handle an adult load but the size of the bike would prohibit use by larger or taller riders meaning that unless you want to ride with your knees pulled up to your earlobes, you might want a bigger bike.

One of the most common positive comments is that owners appreciate the versatility of the bike. It makes just as good a racing bike as it does a trail bike where its rather small frame zips through the trees and corners fast as a rocket with no problems! However, its racing capabilities are outpaced by its performance on trails in most reviewers’ opinions.
Another reason that the bike makes a good starter bike is that it is very lightweight. I have heard of many a young girl who could easily maneuver this 150 pound machine even on rough terrain. More adventurous riders report that they sailed over single or double jumps and were pleased with the soft landing the excellent suspension presents.
One feature that is appreciated by many is the fact that by design the Honda XR100 4 stroke motorcycle has the capability of using the motor as a third brake. This is one advantage that this bike has over motorcycles with two stroke engines. The powerful, reliable performance of this machine is more important than wondering “How fast does a Honda XR100 go”. Another advantage is that a four stroke engine packs a bigger punch in the power department over the faster two stroke bikes. That power is a big bonus when slogging through mud, deep sand or pulling up a steep hill.

Another positive aspect of owning this model is that there is an abundance of after market parts that you can use to pump up the already powerful and pleasing performance. In closing, I’ve never owned or even ridden one of these new or used Honda dirt bikes. But if I had a kid within the suggested age range that wanted to try his (or her) hand at trail riding I believe that the XR100 would be on my short list of Honda dirt bikes to test drive.
