History of the Harley EVO Engine
The air-cooled Harley Davidson Evolution motorcycle engine (popularly known as the EVO) is a 45-degree, V-twin engine first manufactured in 1984. It was built with a 1,340 cc (82 cubic inch) displacement for the Big V-twins, replacing the Shovelhead motor, utilizing the new Twin Cam 88, until the year 2000 when the last one was used in an FXR4.
In 2001, the Harley EVO engine was completely replaced by the Twin Cam 88.
Most consider the Harley Evolution to be the engine that saved the company from filing bankruptcy. In fact, even the engine's name might have been inspired by the company's reformation of its image following the 1981 management buyout from previous owner American Machine and Foundry (AMF).
The heads as well as the cylinders of the Harley EVO engine are made from aluminum to reduce weight and increase air cooling efficiency. The use of aluminum to manufacture both heads and block reduces wear on the head gasket seals in comparison to a combined cast iron and aluminum design which could induce stress on the head gasket seals as a result of different rates of expansion and contraction between dissimilar metals.
