The Softail FXST was released in 1984 and is a registered trademark of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Company. As other motorcycles with the same style of spring rear suspension were manufactured, the word has been applied to other motorcycles along the way. Other brands and models that offer Softail rear suspension would be the:

• Honda 600 vlx shadow
• Yamaha DragStar 650
• Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom
• Victory Vegas Motorcycle

Needless to say, there are more than a few rabid fans of Softails. However popular the more comfortable ride that a Softail might offer; the look of a bike with a rigid frame also known as a hard-tail is preferred. For this reason, the Softail motorcycle frame is specifically designed to resemble Hardtails manufactured in years past.

SOFTAIL MODELS
There are many popular Harleys manufacture with the Softail motorcycle frame. At the time of this article the most popular is the Softail Deluxe with these three models following close behind:

• THE SOFTAIL DEUCE
• THE SPRINGER SOFTAIL

THE SOFTAIL ENGINE
The Harley Davidson Softails do not have rubber-mounted engines. Recent Harley Softails have a counterbalanced version of the Twin Cam engine rather than the type of Twin Cam engine used in the Touring and Harley Dynas.
