Ride It Like Your Hairs' On Fire! Maybe......2

I’m the one that posted the original Anonymous post on the pitfalls of the `89 through `93 engines.

I’m an owner of a `91 that’s stroked and believe me, I love riding it but…..I ride in fear every time I twist the throttle. Keeping the RPM’s maxed out at 5,900 sucks believe me.

It should be common knowledge to everyone looking at replacement engines in the `89 through `93 year group.

The engine cases were cast using a new process that Harley thought was state of the art. Well, maybe not so……Mother Harley! Right? That sucks!

As I said, all of these engine cases are prone to develop cracks and due to that fact, I can’t even RIDE LIKE MY HAIRS’ ON FIRE and I’m 64 years old. Speed is where it’s at. And this engine, if done correctly, should crank out some serious power. Hold on tight boys and girls!

I’m serious about the cases cracking. If you buy this engine, you’ll HAVE to install a torque brace between the engine and transmission on the right side. Look in your favorite parts catalog for one.

Now, if that concerns any of you, you COULD, at added expense, tear it all of the way down, and take the engine cases to Mother Harley and get new cast replacements that they’ll stamp with your original VIN on them. The last time I checked, they ran $750 for the set. Of course, know that even the newer versions aren’t as strong as the `84 through `88 cases but, they’re better than the ones that fall within this year group.

This single cam engine is a strong engine when built correctly. Find out who did this one and ask for documentation.

Good luck to whom ever buys this one.

Would Let You Can Ride Like Your Hairs' On Fire! Maybe......

The price is way over what it should be with OEM cases.

Here's why.

ALL......1989 through 1993 engine cases were casted with a new process.

All of these engine cases are prone to develop cracks as well as sepage of engine oil due to perosity issues. Meaning, the only....way to correct that defect, is to disassemble it entirely, chemically stip the oil from it and coat it on the flywheel side (internally) of them.

For a chance....and only a chance of keeping it from cracking under power is to install a torque brace between the engine and transmission on the right side.

This engine is a strong engine rated stock at 45 HP. With the addition of the S&S Carb and a mild cam, and good exhaust, you can expect around 69 horses.

The price on this isn't even close to what it's worth IMO. Sorry seller.

I'd only pay $1,500 max.

Of course, BUYER BEWARE.

Without knowing the mileage on it prior to the rebuild, there's no way to know how many heat cycles it's been through over its life. Was it dogged? Was it ran hard?

The buyer, needs to look at the possiblity of engine case cracks more than anything else. That's assuming the engine was built by a good builder.

With as much power as this one should put out, The price is reasonable but, over what it should be knowing the the down side of the cases.

The buyer, which won't be me, needs to look at the added expense of a complete tear down and inspection. Parts enclusive because without knowing who built it, it's mearly here say.

Why would I tell folks that are shopping for an EVO motor? Because I own one.

Set the RPM limit at 5,900 and you're good to go. Above that, forgetaboutit. Even with the strong valve train, the cases are in question folks.
