1985 Yamaha Maxim

The 1985 Yamaha Maxim is in ORIGINAL CONDITION and in Illinois it is considered an antique and most certainly vintage everywhere. The Yamaha was bought in 2001 with 5335 miles on it and it currently has 5962.9 miles.

I rarely rode it for several years and it has been stored covered in my garage for the last 6 years.

The previous owner kept it parked inside his home every winter and due to this careful practice there is a lack of weather damage to its paint.

The 1985 Yamaha Maxim has its ORIGINAL motorcycle tires, wires, wiring, brakes, seat, hoses (other than the recently installed NAPA Fuel Filter #7-02357-1.).

The rubber of the tires are beginning to show some dry-rot, but they still hold air as well as they did when I bought it 9 years ago.

Basically, everything on the bike is original except the fluids, foam hand grips and spark plugs. When I pulled it out this year, it would not crank so I took the carbs apart and cleaned them thoroughly.

I changed the oil and filter twice using Rotella 15w-40 conventional oil and a NAPA oil filter because it had been parked for so long.

I also changed the drive shaft fluid using Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube. I changed the plugs 9 years ago but I have not changed the plugs recently but I may still do so.

As far as condition is concerned, despite my resolution to never do it, I am going to use the word MINT.

My use of the word MINT is not to be confused with some clown selling a used car, who tells you it is mint and when you get there he says, "Well, it's MINT for its age."

Mint condition as I am defining it here is SHOWROOM NEW OR EVEN BETTER THAN NEW; MINT I would say is a number 10 on the scale. MINT is a Bloomington Gold Corvette. It's true that everyone has different interpretations of condition; you may be anal, you may not. In my opinion, even if you're a purist, I would rate the bike 9 on a scale of 10, with a 10 being a brand new showroom MINT motorcycle.

So, here we go, the 1985 Yamaha Maxim runs great and looks! It's never been dropped, wrecked, or damaged in any accidents.

The 1985 Maxim's fuel tank has no dents but the paint on the tank has a couple tiny chips that have been touched up.

I have no memory of seeing any dings in high visibility areas like on the top of the tank. The motorcycle's rear fender has some minor paint scratches left from when there was a backrest mounted that are not visible unless you are looking for them.

The front fender has a couple of touched up dings also.

The brake lines are not cracked, the rubber pegs are in excellent condition and the spark Plug wires and hoses show no signs of deterioration.

On the left side of the 1985 Yamaha Maxim's engine, there is some clearcoat that has rubbed away near where the rider's foot would be.

As we all know, Japanese chrome sold in the 1980's was not great to start with and with that being said, the chrome is in excellent condition with miniscule pitting showing here and there on the carb hats.

The chrome exhaust pipes are not discolored from overheating and the brake rotors still have the black paint on the outer edge.

The bike's front tire is a Bridgestone Exedra G526 (100/90-19 57H), Made in Japan T8402, DOT ENM5 TNH115, and the rear tire is a Bridgestone Exedra G526 (130-90-16 67H), Made in Japan T8401, DOT ENXR TNJ115.

The 1985 Maxim is located in Arlington Heights, Illinois and I am asking $3,500 for it.

I am guessing that the likelihood of finding another 1985 Yamaha Maxim for sale in original condition as nice as this one is slim to none. And 1985 was a very nice year for the Maxim.

Its styling was way ahead of its time with white faced gauges arranged in torpedo-like clusters and its aggressive stance is very appealing.

You can park this bike near a bunch of newer bikes and the average rider would never know that this bike is as old as it is.

People really have a hard time believing the year of the bike, until I show them the build date.

In addition to the motorcycle I have extra accessories that are negotiable including engine crash guards, extension peg /highway pegs, backrest (KG), Willie & Max saddlebags, leather pouch (see in photos) from Kelly's Leather Works of Richmond IL price of $52.95 (price tag is inside the pouch), windshield and an extra stock air box.

I bought the used airbox 9 years ago because I wanted to open it in certain areas to allow the engine to breathe better and I had the intentions of jetting the carbs. My idea was to get more out of the bike while keeping its stock appearance. It also has a K&N Air Filter.
