History of the Harley Twin Cam Engine
The Harley Davidson twin cam motorcycle engine Harley Twin Cam engines have been manufactured since 1998. Although these motors were significantly different from the Evolution (EVO) engine, which in turn was derived from the series of single camshaft, overhead valve engines that were first released in 1936, they share a number of characteristics with practically all of the Harley Davidson motorcycle engines that were manufactured previously.
Both of these air-cooled engines have two cylinders in a V-twin configuration at 45° and make use of push-rods to activate the valves. The crankshafts feature a single pin with a knife and fork arrangement that are sandwiched between a pair of flywheels for the connecting rods.
The Twin Cam 88 was released for the 1999 Harley in September 1998. The Twin Cam 96 was released for the 2007 Harley..
The Harley Davidson twin cam engine was not used in the Softail model of the HD family of motorcycles before the 2000 models due to the chassis design and vibration transfer to the Harley Softail's frame as a result of the direct (hard) mounting of the engine.
The "rubber mounting" of the Dyna models diminished the vibration transfer to the frame as well as to the rider and therefore was not a problem.
The issue with the Softails was eliminated by designing an engine variant known as Twin Cam 88B that is pretty much the same engine as the original, which is now referred to as the "Twin Cam 88A", but with a modified engine block design that incorporates twin chain-driven balance shafts. The Twin Cam 96B engine was released at the same time as the Twin Cam 96A model, for the 2007 Harley, and is currently used on all Softails.
