Fewer than 500 Americas were manufactured between 1975-77 as 750S-to-850SS factory conversions.

Why are these bikes so expensive, you may ask.

The high asking price is because the 850SS is one of the most highly regarded Italian motorcycles ever built. They are the brightest star in the galaxy of sport bikes to put things in perspective.

The company had built a stellar reputation of building powerful motors and pairing them with sweet handling chassis since the 50s. Sadly, by the decade of the 70s, the MV Agusta was in a decline. Decades of success was coming to a close. Count Domenico Agusta, the company’s founder, passed away just one year into the decade in 1971. Could it be that he took the life of the company with him to the grave? Did the company flounder due to his death? Many seem to think that was the case.

However, there were many well-trained employees remaining at the factory who had the skill to build many more top quality motorcycles. At some point the 750S America model came into play.

The 750S Americas are rare indeed as only 500 were produced with fewer than 50 of them (some say fewer than 20) were converted into 850SS models.

The differences between an 750S and an 850SS are:

1. The air-cooled 4 cylinder engine was converted to 837cc.

2. A set of EPM cast alloy wheels, with disc brakes and Brembo calipers was added.

3. The engine pulls air through a set of 26mm Dell’Orto carburetors.

The factory in Italy did the work, then shipped the bike to the U.S.A. for sale.

You won't hear many tales from the road that include riders' reminiscing about good times with the rare 1977 MV Agusta 850SS but the experience was said to be up there with the greatest (and much less expensive) Japanese super bikes of era.
