Most sport bikers will tell you that the Yamaha R1 is at the top of the list for having the most profound and long lasting impacting on their sport. Indeed, the Yamaha YZF-R1, that was first released in 1998, has the reputation of having changed the entire category of super-sport motorcycles forever. It's not often that one model can be pinpointed so definitely (and of course their are a few with differences in opinion) but this is one of the most clearly defined on a very short list.

THE INTRODUCTION in 1998
This bike that literally broke the mold was released after the redesign of the Genesis engine successfully offset the gearbox input, the output shafts and the crankshaft. This redesign resulted in an engine with a very short length and a shortened wheelbase length which gave riders much improved handling and a super optimized gravity center for zipping around corners at top speed.

The first Yamaha R1 rolled out with one of the very flashy (very patriotic according to some) paint options in red, white and blue all of which were very popular in America. Europeans’ color preference created a shortage of the motorcycle in blue which compounded the already limited supply created by a a consumer recall due to a clutch problem. The compression ratio of this motorcycle is 11.8:1. with a 6-speed tranny and a multi-plate.
