If you march (or ride) to a different drummer, your idea for standing out in a crowd may not include Harleys. There are quite a few brands out that there that are not considered mainstream. One of the most popular of this genre would be the classic Indian Motorcycle.
The Harley Davidson is certainly more widely owned by bikers and for this reason you don't see nearly as many Indian motorcycle dealers as you will Hawgs. Perhaps this accounts for the extreme cool factor of this bike. It's a fact that at one time it was thought by many that the Indian Motorcycle Company would outrun Harleys in the American marketplace! Did you know that at one time there were twenty motorcycle manufacturers in America and that the largest and most impressive at that time was the Indian? After the great depression they were the only two left standing. I can imagine there was more than one Indian motorcycle sale offering super cheap bargain prices at a time when people were starving! Fact is that what moved Harleys ahead of Indians in the motorcycle manufacturing race was the second World War. Harley Davidson makes a super motorcycle and they were wizards at negotiating war contracts, too. How's that for a rare piece of motorcycle trivia?
You may not see as many Indians as Hondas or Harleys on the open road, but it's undisputed that an antique or vintage Indian motorcycle sale is widely sought after by collectors. If you can find an Indian Motorcycle sale offering one of the 80 cubic inch Blackhawk Chiefs from years 1950 through 1953, you are one of the few and the fortunate! This model for those years is highly sought after and collectible.
If you want to venture off the beaten path and jump on an Indian you will have loads of company, my friend. There is a fine community of Indian Motorcycle clubs and forums. Check them out and enjoy trading customizing tips and suggestions for the best accessories.
I hope that we have convinced you to stop and shop next time you see an Indian Motorcycle sale. There's something about that Indian Chief on the front fender that imbues a feeling of confidence in those that ride the bike behind him. The Native Americans got a raw deal that's true and the capitalism in the United States doesn't change that. But this is one way to help to keep their image and history alive and own a piece of American biker history as well!
